Il futuro è donna
Directed by Marco Ferreri
Synopsis
In this improbable, ponderous story about a couple who do not want to have children of their own, and a pregnant, single woman who needs a home for awhile, the relationship between the three is strange, at the very least.

Review by Lou (rhymes with wow!) ★★★½
Another day, another weird Marco Ferreri movie. The Future is Woman is a bizarre melodrama about.. motherhood? Maybe? I don't know, the whole thing doesn't make a lot of sense (in true Ferreri fashion). It's always interesting, however, in no small part because of the two leading ladies: RWF regular Hanna Schygulla and Ornella Muti, who are both perpetually mesmerizing.

I don't know, there are a couple of Marco Ferreri movies I like quite a bit, but with each of the few I've seen lately, my patience for his specific brand of weird seems to be wearing thin. It's not fun weird, it's actually exhausting. There is simply no rhyme or reason to any narrative development or character motivation here, in the second half especially. Nothing to keep you invested. The only reason I don't regret watching this is Hanna Schygulla. Extravagant mid-80s fashion and hairdo suits her amazingly. I was completely taken. And her scenes with Ornella Muti in the first half are the only moments when the film is alive.

Bizarre is Marco Ferreri's middle name. Several very strange situations that reminded me of a Fassbinder or Pasolini film -- in their later years when they just did not let anything hold them back. Obviously Fassbinder's collaborator Hanna Schygulla was in this, which is a huge selling point. Her hair was insane but still looked good, of course. Prepare yourself for a wild ride if you see this.
This is the 28th film I saw through the 2nd incarnation of MoviePass.
This film is part of the Marco Ferreri series at Lincoln Center.Vegan alert:
-Milk and honey offered
-Fur throw
-Chicken requested
-Chicken eaten
-Prosciutto
-Anna (Hanna Schygulla) eats yogurt
-Meat, fish, eggs are being discussed as supermarket revenue
-Gordon asks if Anna wants ice cream. -

Marco Ferreri goes for a slightly different vibe here with strong stylings of Cinéma du look and Fassbinder. Ferreri fans need not fear though as this is still him through and through, a strange love triangle with primary focus on the females. Reminiscent of The Last Woman or Seed of man with it's social commentary through sexualisation.
Perhaps the Fassbinder vibes come from the casting of Hanna Schygulla but we also have the gorgeous Ferreri regular Ornella Muti and a young Niels Arestrup rounding out our beguiling romantic trio.
Oh and it's Ferreri so it's not a spoiler to say that we end up on a beach!

Review by Tobias Olson ★★★★
Bizarre 1984 euro-disco camp melodrama about a pregnant Ornella Muti seducing Hanna Schygulla and her husband and taking over their lives.
Marco Ferreri has no respect for tone or logic or taste but he has some 'big ideas'. If this got in front of the right eyeballs it might develop a small but affectionate cult following. As it stands, that cult may just be me.

Marco Ferreri directs a 90 minute drama starring Ornella Muti, Hanna Schygulla and Niels Arestrup, about a couple that take in a heavily pregnant woman to live with them.
Y'know what Jim, I'm with you on this one, and I'm also going to defend this one, cause I'd be lying if I said wasn't fond of it.
I went for/liked the oddball take on family this went for, even though they aren't really and its also a menage de trois type thing. Also yay, Bisexual representation!
Like, it has its own charm to it, while showing their points of affection and contention in equal measure, I dunno there was something that endeared me to it while simultaneously liking the oddness,… -

Como disse um amigo: todo país tem a sua Gretchen.
Mas, infelizmente, nem todo país tem o seu Marco Ferreri.

Review by Simon Lang ★
Written and directed by provocateur Marco Ferreri, THE FUTURE IS WOMAN tells the story of a weird ménage à trois, where every male character in the narrative is a complete asshole. This could've been bitingly satirical, but the movie takes itself ridiculously serious, while its message is heavy-handed and pretentious, even laughable at times. Worst of all, it's terribly tedious and tiring to get through, while the chemistry between the actors is non-existent. Not even Ornella Muti can save this mess.

Review by mitc ★★★

Review by Olivia ...
anarchic picture of a non-monogamous relationship with a very pregnant Ornella Muti dishing out plentiful amounts of lesbo-chemistry with my favorite German lioness, Hanna Schygulla. Seeing them together, sharing knowing glances, looking all lovey-dovey, ugh. love spreads.

More movies should just light their scenes with projectors playing footage of like stained glass windows or whatever the fuck was going on here.
Take me to club GEO right now !!
